Hot Mulled Wine recipe

Traditional drink at the (almost) annual Open House at 369 Lansdowne, Westmount:

HOT MULLED WINE

3 cups of sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon or 6 medium cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon ground cloves or whole cloves
2 cups of boiling water
3 medium oranges, thinly sliced
1 medium lemon, thinly sliced
4 litres of dry red wine

1. In an 8-quart saucepot, combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves and water.

2. Add orange and lemon slices to saucepot. Over high heat, heat to boiling;
boil 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Reduce heat to medium; add wine; heat till piping hot but not boiling, stirring occasionally.

4. Carefully ladle individual servings of hot wine into punch cups or heatsafe glasses.
